Hello everyone. My name is Diana Thomas and this is my fourth semester at Sinclair. I am 42 years old and decided to restart my college career after becoming disabled and unable to continue in my chosen profession. I am married and do not have any children. I am a history major and after I finish my Associates Degree at Sinclair I plan on transferring to Wright State to work on my Bachelor’s Degree. I really learned a lot in the first English Composition class and am looking forward to what this one has to teach me.
The picture I chose for my website is just one shelf from my many bookshelves. I read many different genres and it is easier to list what I do not like, self-help and westerns, rather than what I enjoy. I switch between them constantly and usually have more than one book being read at a time. I love to read nonfiction, mainly histories and biographies, which Is probably why I chose history as a major. By the way, do not worry about the skull in the picture; his name is Fred. He is a part of my Halloween decorations. My husband and I put on what is known as a yard haunt every year for Beggars’ Night to entertain the kids who come to our house for candy. It’s always fun and entertaining to see what the kids think of our yard. We have little ones who go through a couple of times and teenagers who will not come up our walk.
I will be posting various pieces of writing from my English 1201 a.k.a. English Composition 2 on this page for the class. The end product will make up a part of my grade for the class.
The Casebook is a part of my research paper and probably the easiest part of it to do. I had to read the various things I wanted to use in my paper and critique them to see if they would work for what I wanted to say about my topic. The research proposal was a bit more difficult. I had a couple of topics I wanted to look at but I had a tough time picking which one I preferred and giving the reasons why I wanted to do it. I learned quite a bit while working on the research paper. While I knew that some parts of the history curriculum in schools does change from time to time, I had no idea about some of the reasons for it. The hardest thing about writing the paper was finding the right thesis statement to tie the various things I wanted to talk about together. The other difficult part was writing so my point would come across clearly in the paper. The last piece of writing from English 1201 is my summary of President Obama’s speech for the 50th anniversary of the March on Washington. I enjoyed writing this one and did not have many issues with it. The hardest parts were my usual grammar and punctuation problems. The final piece of writing comes from my English 1101 class. It is an analysis of the song “Little Boxes,” which was made famous by Pete Seeger. It was my favorite writing assignment from the class. I have always liked the folk song and analyzing it helped me to understand the underlying meaning of it more. It was the first time I had to write a paper without using first person. This was harder to do than I originally thought it would be, though I believe I am finally starting to get out of the first person habit in my writing now.
I do not feel I contributed as much as I could to the class. This was a difficult semester for me for various reasons, and I seemed to be trying to catch up with my classes for most of it. I think I could have budgeted my time better, though some of the issues during the semester could not have been foreseen and that caused a bit of chaos in my schedule. I know I did enough to pass the class, but I am not sure what grade I deserve. I enjoyed taking the class and my favorite parts were learning about the use of ethos, pathos, and logos in writing, as well as learning about the various logical fallacies and how to check for them. I do need to work on my writing a bit more, but with the multiple papers I will be writing in my college career, I should have plenty of time to practice.
